day 98: recession special!

oh, what a recession we're in. today i debated for about 3 minutes whether or not it was financially sound for me to spend $6 on a carton of orange juice. You'd think there would be a deal on OJ seeing as we're in an economic black hole.

You know who did get the recession memo? Ben & Jerry's.
For less than $1 you can grab a delicious soft serve cone. What i was more fascinated by were the hours specified. It's almost as though they assume you won't have a job if you want this ice cream. Who can go over there between 9am and 5pm on a workday? That just seems a little unreasonable to me.

gnight!

day 97: what's it called??

When i first encountered the little food place in new york known as "hot & crusy" I reacted with uncomfortable giggles. This later became confusion, followed closely by disgust then eventually where I am now.... which is a quick shake of the head and eye roll whenever I go by one of these places. Is no one else bothered by their choice of name?? Is it just me??

Anyway, walked by this gem today and couldn't help but laugh out loud. enjoy!

Day 97 is walkin' in a winter wonderland

Beautiful! Snow! Winter! White! FREEEEEEEEEEEEZING. I'm done playing winter. Can I go back home now to flip flops and beaches? Please?!

Day 96: Outside's in.

Continuing in my elevator series, this one is a little different. It's not technically an elevator on the outside, but it is see-through. I'm a very curious little boy and I like to see how things work so this one makes the cut. Plus, I like the reflection of the subway station in the glass. It may be 12 degrees outside but elevators make me feel warm and fuzzy.

day 96: another soho gem

your weekend (and holiday) message is this:

according to a piece of wood stuck into the side of a building on Spring St. and Crosby St. ya'll better share a smile! Does this mean I have to stop checking the stock market and spreading that gloom around my office? I think so....

gnight!

Day 95 would like to buy a vowel

I pass this sign every night on the train home. I don't know what it is about it, but I just love it. It's lovingly nostalgic? Maybe? Or... beautifully photogenic? I don't know. I just think it's cool. I'm always past it by the time I remember to pull out my camera so I always hope the other side will be burnt out too but it's not. Last night though... huzzah! Victory! Almost complete victory... But you get the point.

Ps. Sorry this is late. Technical difficulties...

day 95: obama is not a tranny

When i first saw this tonight I thought it said "Tranny Obama". i completely bypassed the others words, somehow misread tyranny and then got really confused. This has nothing to do with trannies or obama (not) being one of them... just to clear that up.

also, soho is actually the best place on earth for discovering little graffiti treats like this.

gnight!

day 94: looking up

apparently.... this is art. i kid you not, this is part of an art exhibit on Grand St. downtown. maybe its working because it got me to stop and that is no easy task when i've got my eye on getting to the A train as fast as my feet can take me, not yielding for pedestrians, tiny dogs or crazy cat callers. but this.... i think it has something to do with the MTA. i think these rats are little track rats that crawl around in the train tracks and then dash to safety right before an oncoming train crushes them. they're looking up at us, as we look down on them, both wondering what the hell the other is doing.

or they're just plastic rats in a window and I'm sleep deprived.

Day 94 likes the classics

It's finally happened. They've created a bagel so ridiculous I'm offended by it. This doesn't happen easily. I'll eat almost anything bagel-related. I'm incredibly skilled at eating bagels. By far my favorite food. This, however, brings up a lot of feelings I need to work through: shock, horror, anger, depression, anxiety, sadness, fear... I'm hereby boycotting Einstein Bros. Bagels. Until the next time I'm hungry.

Day 93 and The Oversized Christmas Decorations: A Children's Story

This appeared in the theatre lobby last week. Within minutes of Thanksgiving ending. I wonder if someone wasn't waiting until the stroke of midnight Thursday night until the official start of the Christmas season AND NOT A MOMENT TOO SOON. You don't quite get an impression of the scale from this picture but trust me when I tell you, that mother is BIG. I like this angle because you just make out the merch stand upstairs in the center. If DD did a Christmas special I imagine this as the emblem: this massive wreath-monster with the DD logo in the center. Comedy.

day 92: prisoner to shiny things

I blame myself. Well.... I blame these.

I blame the designer who thought it would be a good idea to put shiny things on shoes. Actually it was clearly a great idea because it got me to willingly hand him/her my money. and what did i get in return??

a) pain
b) blisters
c) swollen feet
d) happiness

If you guessed (a), (b), or (c) you were correct. Though i did feel happiness. For almost 4 hours. After which all pleasure was replaced with shoe misery.

But the real sick part? I love these so much I'll probably wear them again tomorrow.

Day 92 goes to Chicago

Reason #8231 why CTA beats the MTA: the signs on the trains change to show which direction the train is going. And it changes when the train turns around! These gears actually turn the sign around! So that when you're waiting in the station (and the train opens on the same side at every station) you only see the correct sign! It's magical!

Ps. Reason #8230 is that the trains are wired for cell reception everywhere, even underground!

Pps. Reason #8232 is that the announcements are all pre-recorded so you can actually understand them!

Day 91 likes family bonding

Dave & Buster's happened tonight. Giant beers happened tonight. "The Midway" full of arcade games happened tonight. Then this happened. Mother and son learning the joys of firearms. Ah youth...
